Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, named after a clergyman who pioneered Savannah's civil rights movement, tells the story of the struggle for civil rights in Savannah and also depicts how the thoroughfare on which it stands, formerly West Broad Street, was once the center of the city's thriving African-American business district.
